Mole screening is essential for early detection of skin cancer - but long NHS waits and high private hospital costs can make access difficult. Suspected cancers are supposed to be seen via an urgent 2 week wait referral pathway, however currently in Dorset this is more like 4-6.
I offer professional mole assessments using dermatoscopy, with images securely reviewed by a UK based consultant dermatologist, providing a clear report within 48 hours.
Fast reassurance when you're worried
Early detection of potential issues
Cheaper than private hospital dermatology
Avoid long GP and NHS waits
Professional imaging using a dermatoscope, increasing accuracy
Performed by a healthcare professional with dermatology and aesthetics experience
1. Clinical History
We briefly discuss your skin concerns, the mole you're worried about, and any relevant risk factors (e.g. sun exposure, family history).
2. Dermatoscopic Examination
Using a specialist dermatoscope, I take high-resolution, magnified images of your mole. Dermatoscopy allows detailed assessment of pigment networks, vascular patterns and subtle changes invisible to the naked eye.
3. Secure Dermatologist Review
Your images are uploaded to the portal, where a GMC registered Consultant Dermatologist reviews them and provides:
A clinical diagnosis
Whether the mole is benign or requires monitoring
Clear advice on whether referral or removal is recommended
4. 48 Hour Report
You receive a written dermatology report within 48 hours. This is significantly faster than GP or hospital referral pathways, and at a fraction of the cost of private dermatology appointments.
Before any treatment, I examine the lesion to ensure it is benign and safe to treat. If there is any concern about the lesion’s appearance, cryotherapy will not be performed and medical referral will be advised. I do offer a mole screening service in practice that links you to a UK based consultant dermatologist. Click here for more information.
Quick; often less than 10 minutes
Mild stinging or cold sensation
No anaesthetic needed for most lesions
Immediate return to normal activities
Treatment takes around 20–30 minutes.
You should book a screening if you notice any of the ABCDE changes:
A – Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
B – Border: irregular, jagged or blurred edges
C – Colour: multiple colours or sudden change
D – Diameter: larger than 6mm
E – Evolving: any new change in size, shape, colour or sensation
Other symptoms that warrant checking include itching, bleeding, scabbing or a new mole appearing in adulthood.
Early reassurance can make all the difference.
